Directions of scientific research
IGE RAS is a multidisciplinary institute.
The purpose and subject of the activity of IGE RAS is to conduct fundamental, exploratory and applied scientific research of geoecological problems in the field of engineering geology, hydrogeology, geocryology and engineering geophysics in the following areas:
- Common problems of interaction between man and nature – as the basis of sustainable development.
- Comprehensive study of territories to ensure rational use of natural resources in the implementation of state programs and the construction of unique and responsible structures. The fundamental foundations of the zoning of territories according to natural conditions for the development of schemes for their economic use.
- Development of theory and methods of forecasting and risk assessment of dangerous geological processes under the influence of natural and man-made factors; development of methods of engineering protection and rehabilitation of territories.
- Study of the stability of territories and the development of hazardous processes in the cryolithozone (permafrost zone) in connection with global climate changes and man-made impacts during the development of northern territories, development of adaptation technologies.
- Development of the theory of formation and change of properties and condition of rocks under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors.
- Development of remote methods for complex assessment of natural conditions of territories and monitoring.
- The development of digital technologies in the creation of geoinformation systems and specialized mapping.
- Study of geoecological problems of Moscow, large urban agglomerations and urbanized territories.
- Study of pollution of environmental components (surface and groundwater, rocks), and assessment of pollution risk. Radioactive, industrial and municipal waste management.
- Development of theory and methods of actual and predictive geoecological monitoring of natural and technical systems (urbanized territories, oil and gas pipelines, mineral deposits, energy facilities, etc.).
- IGE RAS provides information, expert and cartographic support for decision-making by federal and regional public authorities in the field of geoecology, engineering geology and hydrogeology, participates in the preparation of annual reports to the Government of Russia in the field of environmental protection and natural and man-made safety of the population; participates in scientific assessment, analysis of problems and development of recommendations on federal projects laws and regulations.
